For the first time, Ukraine will take part in the Guatemala Biennale of Contemporary Art with a project by artist Alevtina Kakhidze that reflects on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Culture on October 2.

Running from November 6, 2025, to February 15, 2026, the 24th Bienal de Arte Paiz will be held in Guatemala City and Antigua. Founded in 1978, it remains one of Latin America’s most prominent art events.

This year’s theme, The World Tree,”brings together artists from Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and Oceania, under the curatorship of Eugenio Viola.

Kakhidze will present I’m Still Drawing This War, a project combining drawings, diaries, and a 360° film that documents her personal experience of Russia’s war against Ukraine. The story begins in 2014, with conversations between the artist and her mother in occupied Zhdanivka, Donetsk region. It moves through the first days of the full-scale invasion and the liberation of the Kyiv region, ending in 2025—as the war continues.

“In my works, I talk about how my mother endured the war in a basement—and later, how I did too, when the Russians were only a few kilometers from my home, as well as about Russian imperialism,” Kakhidze says.

Alevtina Kakhidze is a multidisciplinary Ukrainian artist whose work spans performance, drawing, video, and curatorial projects. Her artistic practice delves into themes of consumerism, plant culture, feminism, and the experience of living through war. Born in Zhdanivka, Donetsk region, she currently lives and works in Muzychi, Kyiv region.

Kakhidze is a laureate of the Kazimir Malevich Award (2008) and the Women in Arts Award (2023). In 2024, her project was showcased at the Malta Biennale as part of Ukraine’s National Pavilion From South to North, organized by the cultural memory platform Past / Future / Art.

Earlier, Kyiv was officially designated a UNESCO City of Music and is now part of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. The title acknowledges the Ukrainian capital’s deep musical heritage and its vibrant contemporary creative scene.
