The Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation (UCCD) has issued a new forecast for Russian disinformation activities in the second half of August, highlighting several key tactics expected to dominate Russian media narratives.

The forecast, shared on the UCCD’s official website on August 11, points to a growing intensity in Russia’s information warfare campaigns, particularly targeting Ukraine’s international relationships and its ongoing military efforts.

Among the most notable threats identified are manipulative narratives regarding peace talks and Ukraine’s stance on negotiations with Russia. The UCCD predicts an increase in Russian disinformation efforts designed to undermine Ukraine’s position in any future ceasefire discussions.

Specifically, Russian propaganda is expected to promote the false narrative that Ukraine is reluctant to pursue peace, accusing the country of blocking negotiations or setting “unrealistic demands.” These messages will be amplified ahead of key diplomatic meetings, especially with US officials, according to UCCD.

The disinformation forecast also highlights an attempt to erode Ukraine’s credibility, painting the country as an unimportant player in negotiations, while falsely suggesting that its fate is being decided solely by Russia and the United States. A key element of this strategy will include narratives that Europe is incapable of managing its own security without Russian involvement, aiming to increase divisions between NATO members.

The UCCD also anticipates an uptick in disinformation related to economic sanctions against Russia, with Russian propaganda focusing on the supposed ineffectiveness of these measures.

Such narratives will be targeted both at Russian and Western audiences, attempting to sow doubt about the effectiveness of sanctions and their negative impact on the US and European economies.

The forecasted disinformation tactics come at a time when Russia continues to escalate its hybrid warfare against Ukraine, employing both traditional military attacks and a sophisticated online propaganda campaign. Ukraine’s Counter-Disinformation Center is calling for continued international cooperation to fight back against these efforts, stressing that combating Russia’s information war is just as critical as the military defense on the ground.

Additionally, the UCCD predicts that there will be a rise in efforts to undermine the Ukrainian government’s efforts to negotiate prisoner exchanges, with Russian media likely to spread fake statements and manipulated interviews purportedly from Ukrainian POWs. This is seen as a part of the broader Russian strategy to disrupt Ukraine’s diplomatic relations and paint the government as uncooperative in humanitarian matters.

As these disinformation tactics take shape, Ukraine’s leaders continue to urge the international community to remain vigilant and united against the growing Russian propaganda machine. The UCCD’s warnings reflect a need for proactive engagement with both the media and public in Europe and beyond to ensure that false Russian narratives do not gain traction.

Previously, it was reported that the Russian state-run media TASS has circulated claims that Russian special forces captured two high-ranking British officers—identified as Colonels Edward Blake and Richard Carroll—in Ukraine, but fact-checkers from The Insider stated it’s a fabrication.
