Ukraine's Agricultural Sector Faces $80 Billion in Losses Due to Russia’s Full-Scale Invasion

Ukraine’s agricultural sector has suffered significant losses, estimated at approximately $80 billion, due to the Russia’s ongoing war. This figure includes both direct and indirect damages, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food, citing Minister Vitaliy Koval on February 25.
The estimated losses encompass a wide range of factors, including disruptions in logistics, land rehabilitation, demining efforts, land loss, and increased costs for fertilizers and fuel.
Minister Koval recently participated in the presentation of a World Bank report assessing the damages and financial needs arising from the war. According to the report, Ukraine requires $524 billion for full-scale reconstruction. Key priorities include housing restoration, energy sector rehabilitation, and critical infrastructure repairs, with agriculture being recognized as a separate area requiring focused recovery efforts.
The World Bank’s assessment estimates direct damages to Ukraine’s agricultural sector at $11.2 billion. Additionally, around $700 million is needed specifically for irrigation and water resource management.
“I am convinced that the recovery of the agricultural sector must begin today. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy, together with international partners, is working on various support programs for farmers. A key priority is assistance to farmers in frontline areas,” emphasized the Minister.
Previously, it was reported that during the Berlin Conference of Agriculture Ministers, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, and Lithuania signed an updated memorandum to launch the Grain Verification Scheme.
