Ukraine’s ambassador in Prague, Vasyl Zvarych, condemned what he called “offensive and hate-filled” remarks by Tomio Okamura, the speaker of the lower house of the Czech parliament, about Ukraine, Ukrainians, and Ukraine’s leadership, according to Zvarych’s statement on January 2.

Zvarych said the comments, delivered in Okamura’s New Year address, reflected Okamura’s personal position and said it was “formed, obviously, under the influence of Russian propaganda.”

He said Okamura’s words about Ukrainians and Ukraine, including about the country’s “democratically elected leadership,” were “unworthy and absolutely unacceptable.” He said they contradicted “the principles of a democratic society and the values on which the Czech Republic is based as an integral part of the European community.”

In his New Year statement, Okamura said “money is flowing in all directions” and that “everyone is getting something from this business,” accusing “Western companies and governments” as well as “Ukrainian thieves around the Zelenskyy junta” of profiting, and claiming they were “building toilets out of gold.”

He added: “Let them steal, but not from us, and let such a country not be in the European Union.”

Zvarych said he expected Czech state institutions and civil society to provide an appropriate assessment of the remarks and of whether they matched “the high state position” held by the politician.

Earlier it was reported that Czechia fulfilled its commitment to supply 1.8 million large‑caliber ammunition rounds for Ukraine’s defense by the end of 2025, underlining continued practical military support despite internal debates.
