Ukraine’s Ground Robots Are Getting a 30mm Cannon—Bad News for Russian Armor

A Ukrainian defense technology company is planning to develop a new ground-based robotic combat system armed with a 30mm cannon—an upgrade that could significantly expand the role of unmanned vehicles on the battlefield, according to DevDroid CEO Yurii Poritskyi, who spoke about the project in a new video published by Militarnyi on January 7.
According to Poritskyi, the system is expected to operate effectively at ranges of up to 4–5 kilometers, a capability that would place it well beyond earlier generations of Ukrainian ground robots.

The company intends to begin formal development of the project in 2026, starting with the creation of detailed technical requirements for the platform.
Poritskyi noted that integrating a 30mm cannon presents a major engineering challenge, primarily due to recoil. Compared to lighter weapons previously mounted on ground robotic complexes, a cannon of this caliber produces significantly greater force, requiring a much larger and more robust platform.
Because of this, the new system will need to be built on a heavier and more powerful ground robotic chassis capable of absorbing recoil while maintaining stability and mobility under combat conditions.
According to DevDroid, the future ground robot is envisioned as both an assault platform and a frontline support system, designed to operate alongside infantry units. In addition to providing direct fire support during attacks, the robotic complex is expected to help protect infantry formations in high-threat environments.

According to Militarnyi, when realized, the project would mark one of the most ambitious steps yet in Ukraine’s rapidly evolving use of unmanned ground systems, moving from reconnaissance and logistics roles toward heavily armed, front-line combat platforms.
Earlier, Ukrainian assault troops used a ground-based robotic combat platform to stop a Russian armored personnel carrier and derail an attempted night assault.
