Ukraine’s special operations unit Lasar’s Group has destroyed a Russian TOS-1A Solntsepyok heavy flamethrower system, the unit reported via Telegram on December 24.

According to the statement, the Russian system was detected while it was being used to strike positions held by Ukraine’s Defense Forces. Aerial reconnaissance by Ukraine’s 32nd Separate Mechanized Brigade identified the TOS-1A and established its coordinates, which were then passed to external heavy drone operators from Lasar’s Group.

The strike took place while the Russian system was on the move. A precision drone drop disabled the vehicle, bringing it to a halt and resulting in its destruction.

According to Militarnyi, citing data compiled by the OSINT project Oryx, Ukraine’s Defense Forces have destroyed, damaged, or captured more than 35 TOS-1A systems since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion. Of those, more than 24 have been destroyed, six damaged, and three captured.

Russian forces use the TOS-1A Solntsepyok primarily for short-range, high-intensity fire support against concentrated targets.

Its main role is to destroy infantry positioned in trenches, bunkers, and fortified areas, as well as to strike lightly armored vehicles and dense troop formations. The system is also used to clear urban terrain, tree lines, and defensive strongpoints, and to weaken or break through prepared defensive lines ahead of ground assaults.

Earlier, Ukrainian drone operators took out a Russian TOS-1A Solntsepyok thermobaric rocket system during fighting on the Lyman axis, according to the footage released by Ukraine’s 63rd Separate Mechanized Brigade shows.
