Ukrainian biathlete Anastasiia Merkushyna won Ukraine’s first gold medal at the 2026 European Biathlon Championships, taking victory in the women’s individual race in Shushen, Norway, Suspilne reported on January 28.

Merkushyna delivered a flawless performance, hitting all 20 targets and avoiding any penalty minutes.

Combined with a top-15 shooting speed, this secured her the European title with a winning time of 45:33.9, ahead of Italy’s Samuela Comola and France’s Voldiya Galmas-Polen, Suspilne wrote.

Ukraine entered six athletes for the race, though two—Ksenia Prykhodko and Tetiana Tarasiuk—withdrew before the start. Valeriia Dmytrenko finished 19th despite one penalty minute, while Nadiia Belkina placed 31st and Liliia Steblyna 79th.

Previously, it was reported that Ukrainian athletes Maryna Hladun and Tetiana Lazarenko have secured the gold medal at the 2025 Women’s European Beach Volleyball Championship—Ukraine’s first continental title in this discipline.
