Ukrainian Demining Efforts Top 1 Million Devices Cleared Since Russian Invasion Began

More than 1 million explosive objects have been neutralized by demining units of Ukraine’s Security and Defense Forces since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal reported, on September 29.
According to the Main Department for Mine Action, Civil Protection, and Environmental Safety, nearly 6,500 square kilometers of territory have been surveyed to date. This includes 9,691 kilometers of roads, 10,164 kilometers of power lines, and 3,748 kilometers of railway lines. In addition, 37,000 square kilometers of de-occupied territory have been declared safe for use following non-technical surveys .
“Thanks to systematic and coordinated work, we are managing to increase the pace of demining carried out by mine action operators,” Shmyhal emphasized.

He noted that in 2024, a total of 38 square kilometers were cleared of mines, while this year nearly 150 square kilometers have already been demined—a sharp increase that highlights the growing efficiency and coordination of efforts to rid Ukrainian land of the deadly legacy of war.
Earlier, it was reported that demining units of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense cleared 5,973 hectares of liberated land contaminated by explosive remnants of war in August 2025.
Safety was restored to 5,653 hectares of farmland, 7.6 kilometers of roads, 15 kilometers of power lines, and nearly 67 kilometers of railway. Specialists also detected and destroyed 8,410 explosive devices.
