Ukrainian Engineers Develop New Flamingo Drone to Intercept Russian Orlan
Ukrainian drone engineering company Vinnytsky Bdzholy has announced the completion of government testing for their new FPV drone, the Flamingo VB140, an interceptor designed to defend Ukrainian airspace from Russian reconnaissance drones like Orlan.
Andriy Oleksyuk, CEO of the company, discussed the drone’s potential to enhance defense capabilities in a recent interview on November 1.
The Flamingo VB140 is tailored to intercept and neutralize Russian surveillance UAVs, which are frequently deployed for battlefield observation and to coordinate artillery and missile strikes.
“VB140 Flamingo represents a vital step forward for Ukraine’s technological development in defense,” the developers said.
“Its ability to disrupt enemy reconnaissance could be pivotal in safeguarding civilians and protecting our troops.”
The VB140 Flamingo is capable of operating up to 4.5 kilometers in altitude and in a range of up to 50 kilometers, making it versatile for varied tactical scenarios.
According to the developers, the drone can be operated both day and night.
Its high autonomy makes the Flamingo a reliable tool for constant airspace monitoring and rapid threat response.
“Flamingo VB140 allows Ukrainian defenders to react swiftly to threats above their positions,” added Oleksyuk.
Following successful testing, the VB140 is now ready for deployment by Ukraine’s Armed Forces.
The company also indicated that an upcoming UAV model is being developed specifically for the interception of Russian strike drones, such as the Shahed, thereby further reinforcing the nation’s defensive perimeter against threats to critical infrastructure.
“Our every project isn’t just a step forward, but a leap into the future. The next model will not only outdo its predecessors—it will become a keystone in our sky defense mechanism!” said Andriy Oleksyuk.
Earlier, the Ukrainian General Staff reported a record number of Russian drone attacks, with a total of 2,023 drones launched at Ukraine in October, primarily aimed at civilian and critical infrastructure.
