Ukrainian Intelligence Drones Wipe Out $70M Worth of Russian Air Defenses in Zaporizhzhia

Ukrainian intelligence drones have struck multiple Russian air defense systems in the temporarily occupied Zaporizhzhia region, according to footage released by the Main Intelligence Directorate (HUR) of Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense.
The published video shows a Pantsir-S1 air defense system attempting to intercept an incoming drone. The system initially fires a missile that misses its target, then switches to its 30 mm anti-aircraft cannons in an effort to shoot down the UAV.
The drone’s first strike attempt is also unsuccessful, prompting the Russian crew to begin relocating the vehicle. During this maneuver, a second drone successfully hits the system’s combat module.
While the footage lacks confirmation from objective control systems, the drone appears to have struck the most critical component of the Pantsir-S1, likely rendering the system non-operational without substantial repairs.
A second strike targeted a self-propelled launcher from the Buk-M3 surface-to-air missile system. The drone impacted the radar section, disabling its core detection capabilities. Based on the hit location, the system will require prolonged and costly restoration.
HUR drones also attempted to strike a 9S19 “Imbir” radar from the S-300V air defense system. However, available footage indicates the drone missed the intended target.
Although the specific UAV models used in the operation were not disclosed, the drone interface closely resembles systems previously employed by HUR in operations against Russian air defense assets, including those in occupied Crimea. In a prior March 19 strike, these drones were used to destroy three Pantsir-S1 systems and a Mi-8 helicopter.
In earlier operations, Ukrainian drones also damaged or destroyed several radar installations, including two 48Ya6-K1 “Podlet” units, two 1L125 “Nioby-SV” systems, and three 39N6 “Kasta 2E2” radars. These assets are key components of Russia’s aerial surveillance and targeting infrastructure.
Earlier, on June 8, drone operators from Ukraine’s 14th Separate Regiment of Unmanned Aerial Systems destroyed a Russian Buk-M3 air defense system, reportedly worth $45 million, along with its missile stockpile. According to the General Staff, the strike fully disabled the system, with video footage confirming the detonation and destruction.
