Ukrainian Military Intel Achieves World’s First Naval Drone Strike on Aerial Target, Video
Ukrainian defense forces have achieved a groundbreaking military success in the ongoing Russia’s war against Ukraine. For the first time in history, a Russian Mi-8 helicopter was destroyed using a naval drone.
This operation was carried out by “Group 13,” a specialized unit of Ukraine’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (HUR), employing the Magura V5 naval drone system.
According to a statement from HUR, the operation occurred in the Black Sea, near Cape Tarkhankut, in Russian-occupied Crimea. The Magura V5 drone, equipped with R-73 “SeeDragon” missiles, targeted the helicopter, successfully neutralizing it. Another helicopter was reportedly damaged in the same engagement but managed to return to its base.
Advancing naval drone capabilities
Naval drones, particularly Ukraine’s Magura V5, are emerging as a vital component of modern warfare. The Magura V5 stands out as the first unmanned naval vehicle capable of neutralizing aerial targets, marking a significant milestone in military technology.
These drones are equipped with advanced reconnaissance cameras, GPS navigation systems, and artificial intelligence for autonomous operations. Certain models can operate at distances exceeding 800 kilometers, allowing for deep strikes into adversary-controlled territories.
Naval drones have been used to target Russian military vessels in the Black Sea, strategic installations such as ports, fuel depots, and air defense systems, as well as other key assets on occupied territory. Additionally, they contribute to ensuring the safety of maritime corridors and civilian shipping.
Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine conducted a nighttime operation in Kerch Bay using Sea Baby maritime drones. These advanced drones targeted Russian helicopters, patrol boats, and military equipment, inflicting significant damage, including striking a barge carrying supplies for the Kerch Bridge. Equipped with automatic targeting systems, the drones successfully countered Russian defenses.
