UK’s Babcock to 3D Print Equipment for Ukraine, Including Challenger 2 Tank Parts

British defense contractor Babcock has secured a contract from the UK Ministry of Defense to develop a project that will enable the Ukrainian military to print military equipment using 3D printers.
The company announced on April 3 that, as the prime contractor, Babcock will collaborate with fellow British defense technology firm QinetiQ to create digital drawings and computer-aided design (CAD) files for military parts, which can be printed as needed.
The project includes reverse engineering existing parts to analyze their functionality and design, allowing them to be digitally reproduced.
The resulting digital files will provide Ukraine the capability to manufacture these parts during combat, including via 3D printing, ensuring the military has access to critical equipment when and where it is most needed.
“We aim to give Ukraine the capability to recreate the military parts that they need, where and when it really matters. This innovation builds on our engineering expertise and technology capability, giving us further opportunities to optimise 3D printing,” said Tom Newman, CEO of Babcock’s Land Sector.
This contract is part of Babcock’s ongoing support for Ukraine. The company also recently committed to supporting the Ukrainian Armed Forces with the restoration of combat vehicles such as Challenger 2 tanks.
In December 2023, Babcock was awarded a three-year contract to maintain two hunt-class mine countermeasures vessels, Cherkasy and Chernihiv, for the Ukrainian Navy.
Additionally, Babcock established Babcock Ukraine LLC and opened an office in Ukraine to focus on supporting Ukrainian customers and industry partners.
Earlier, Russia’s state defense conglomerate Rostec announced the delivery of a new batch of BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicles to the Russian military.
