The United States has unveiled a new $988 million security assistance package for Ukraine, aimed at bolstering the nation’s defense capabilities amid ongoing Russian aggression.
The announcement was made by the US Department of Defense on December 7, coinciding with the annual Reagan National Defense Forum in California.
According to the Pentagon, the package is being provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and includes critical support for Ukraine’s military operations.
The assistance encompasses munitions for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS), unmanned aerial systems (UAS), and a range of equipment and spare parts necessary for the maintenance and repair of artillery, tanks, and other armored vehicles.
“This package reflects our unwavering commitment to ensuring Ukraine has the tools needed to defend its sovereignty,” the Pentagon stated.
Key Components of the Package
HIMARS munitions to enhance Ukraine’s long-range precision strike capabilities.
Unmanned aerial systems, providing advanced surveillance and operational support.
Logistical support, including components and spare parts for sustaining critical military equipment.
This latest assistance marks the 22nd package under USAI and is distinct from direct transfers from US military stockpiles, instead sourcing equipment directly from manufacturers.
The funding allocation reduces the remaining USAI budget, previously at $2.21 billion, by nearly half. Despite this, President Joe Biden retains the authority to allocate up to $6 billion under presidential drawdown powers, which allow the rapid transfer of equipment from existing US military reserves.
Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with French President Emmanuel Macron and US President-elect Donald Trump at the Elysee Palace in Paris. Zelenskyy described the discussions as productive, focusing on Ukraine’s battlefield situation, humanitarian needs, and the pursuit of a just peace.
