NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte confirmed that the US continues to provide critical intelligence and weaponry to Ukraine through European partners, CBS News reported on March 23.

Rutte clarified that despite President Donald Trump’s recent criticisms of European defense spending, the Washington administration remains a decisive force in Ukraine’s defense. Rutte emphasized that Trump is balancing complex strategic interests alongside a team including Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, and Marco Rubio to exert “maximum pressure” on Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

While trilateral peace talks between Kyiv, Washington, and Moscow were briefly postponed due to escalating hostilities in the Middle East, direct security consultations between US and Ukrainian officials resumed over the weekend, according to CBS News.

Rutte, who recently held a ninety-minute meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in London, noted that the Ukrainian leadership is prepared for a negotiated end to the war but requires continued Western backing to ensure a fair deal.

He credited Trump as the only figure capable of breaking the diplomatic stalemate with Putin while simultaneously pressuring the Ukrainian side to finalize a workable agreement. This ongoing support persists despite a recent Kremlin proposal to swap intelligence cuts—where Russia offered to stop sharing data with Iran if the US abandoned its support for Ukraine—which the Trump administration reportedly rejected, CBS News reported.

The Trump administration recently confirmed that its ongoing trilateral negotiations with Kyiv and Moscow are centered on securing “strong security guarantees” for postwar Ukraine. Currently, as Washington balances its mediation efforts with rising tensions in the Middle East. This diplomatic maneuvering continues as NATO allies ramp up the “Prioritised Ukraine Requirements List” (PURL) to sustain Ukraine’s defensive capabilities during the transition toward potential peace talks.
