Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure amount to a “mockery” of US-led peace efforts, while Moscow’s use of the Oreshnik missile represents another “dangerous and unclear” escalation of the war, US Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations Tammy Bruce said, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty on January 12.

Bruce said both Ukraine and Russia should be seeking de-escalation in light of ongoing diplomatic efforts by the administration of US President Donald Trump. Instead, she said, the Kremlin’s actions point in the opposite direction.

According to Bruce, Russia’s recent behavior risks widening the war rather than moving it toward a negotiated end.

“Regarding Ukraine, including the launch of the Oreshnik ballistic missile, which is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead, directed against Ukraine near the border with Poland and NATO, this constitutes yet another dangerous and unclear escalation of this war, even as the United States is urgently working with Kyiv, other partners, and Moscow to end the war through negotiations,” Bruce said.

She added that Russia’s continued strikes on Ukraine’s energy system and civilian infrastructure appear to openly undermine diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the fighting.

“Instead of working toward a peaceful resolution, Russia’s actions risk only expanding the war,” Bruce said, adding that attacks on Ukraine’s energy sector look like “mockery” from the Kremlin.

“We condemn Russia’s ongoing and intensifying attacks on Ukraine’s energy facilities and other civilian infrastructure. These attacks are a mockery of the cause of peace, which is of paramount importance to the world and to President Trump,” she concluded.

Earlier, reports emerged that Russia’s hypersonic Oreshnik missile struck a workshop of a Ukrainian state-owned enterprise in the western city of Lviv overnight, causing only minor structural damage.
