Russia’s hypersonic Oreshnik missile struck a workshop of a Ukrainian state-owned enterprise in the western city of Lviv overnight, causing only minor structural damage, according to a Reuters report citing a senior Ukrainian official on January 9.

The missile, fired close to the border with NATO member Poland, hit the facility with several submunitions.

The impacts resulted in “minor penetrations of concrete structures” inside the workshop, while additional submunitions created craters in a nearby forested area, the official told Reuters. There were no reports of major destruction at the site.

The strike marked the second known use of the Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile against Ukraine.

Kyiv and European officials described the launch as an attempt to intimidate Ukraine’s Western partners at a sensitive moment in discussions over future security guarantees, Reuters wrote.

Moscow claimed the missile was fired in retaliation for an alleged Ukrainian drone attack on a residence linked to Russian leader Putin, an accusation denied by Kyiv and dismissed by US officials.

Ukrainian authorities said the missile carried inert, non-explosive warheads.

The Oreshnik launch was part of an overnight assault involving drones and other missiles that caused civilian casualties and widespread power outages in Kyiv.

European leaders condemned the strike as a clear escalation and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, according to Reuters.

Previously, it was reported that a complete collection of Vladimir Lenin’s works was reportedly destroyed in an underground archive in Lviv after Russia’s ballistic missile, Oreshnik, struck the city, Ukrainian military expert Serhii Flash stated.

Flash, a consultant in radio technologies, explained that the missile penetrated two reinforced concrete slabs before obliterating the archive, writing about the strike on Telegram.
