US Will Drop Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks If No Progress Seen Within Days, Rubio Says

The United States will halt its efforts to mediate a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine within days unless there are clear indications that a deal is possible, Secretary of State Marco Rubio said on Friday.
According to Reuters on April 18, speaking in Paris following meetings with European and Ukrainian officials, Rubio noted that President Donald Trump remains open to a negotiated settlement but emphasized that Washington is prepared to shift focus if meaningful progress is not made soon.
“If both sides are serious about peace, we are ready to assist. Otherwise, we will move on,” Rubio stated.
Rubio underscored that the administration is weighing the viability of continuing diplomatic engagement. “If our efforts to stop the war in Ukraine fail in the coming days, we will inform President Trump that negotiations are no longer a realistic option,” he said.
The statement follows President Trump’s recent remarks suggesting a ceasefire “may be close,” and that Moscow is expected to respond soon to a proposal from the United States.
Earlier, Ukraine’s Vice Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko said Kyiv and Washington had made significant progress on a minerals deal, with both sides preparing to formalize the agreement in a memorandum of understanding. The deal is expected to boost reconstruction efforts and attract investment, pending ratification by Ukraine’s parliament.
