What Makes Rapid Ranger So Dangerous for Shaheds—And Why Ukraine Keeps Using It

Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense has highlighted the growing role of the British-made Rapid Ranger air defense system in countering Russian drone attacks, particularly against Shahed strike drones, according to a statement published on April 21.
Since the start of 2026, Russia has intensified large-scale attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, combining missile strikes with waves of drones. During this period, Ukrainian forces have destroyed approximately 9,500 Shahed-type attack drones, along with a significant number of missiles, the Ministry wrote.

Among the systems proving particularly effective in this effort is the Rapid Ranger, a highly mobile and automated short-range air defense platform designed to detect and engage aerial threats at close distances.
The system can identify targets at ranges of up to 15 kilometers and engage them at distances of up to 7 kilometers using LMM Martlet missiles.
Its effectiveness is enhanced by a combination of optical and electronic surveillance tools, providing full 360-degree situational awareness.

The platform can also be equipped with a panoramic infrared sensor for long-range detection, as well as radar systems that allow it to operate independently or as part of a broader air defense network.
A key advantage of the Rapid Ranger lies in its missile guidance system. The LMM Martlet uses both infrared and laser guidance, allowing it to engage targets that have a low thermal signature or attempt to evade detection using heat decoys.
This capability makes it particularly effective against reconnaissance drones such as the Orlan-10, which are designed to be difficult to track.

Mobility is another defining feature. Weighing around 500 kilograms and built with a modular design, the system can be mounted on a wide range of platforms, from pickup trucks and armored vehicles to tracked carriers.
In Ukrainian service, Rapid Ranger units are often installed on Spanish-made URO VAMTAC tactical vehicles, which can reach speeds of up to 135 km/h and quickly reposition across large distances.
The LMM Martlet missile itself measures approximately 1.3 meters in length and weighs 13 kilograms. It can reach speeds of up to 1,800 km/h while maintaining an effective engagement range of up to 7 kilometers.

Despite its relatively compact size, the missile delivers performance comparable to other Western systems, while remaining significantly more cost-effective.
Within Ukraine’s broader air defense architecture, Rapid Ranger fills a critical niche. It bridges the gap between mobile fire groups and larger, less flexible air defense systems, offering a fast-response solution in areas where radar coverage is limited or heavier systems cannot be deployed quickly enough.
Earlier, reports emerged that the United Kingdom was about to supply Ukraine with 1,000 additional multi-purpose air defense missiles.
The weapons in question are Lightweight Multirole Missiles (LMMs) manufactured in Belfast, which are used in the Rapid Ranger air defense system.
