Mauricio Sulaimán, President of the World Boxing Council (WBC), has issued a public message of solidarity to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 27.

In his statement, the prominent sports official emphasized his unwavering support for the Ukrainian people.

Sulaimán reaffirmed that the boxing community stands with the nation as it continues to face the challenges of the ongoing war, highlighting the WBC’s commitment to justice and peace within the international sporting arena.

“It has been 4 years—we continue to pray for peace,” Sulaimán wrote.

In addition to this statement of support, the WBC has granted Oleksandr Usyk a voluntary defense of his heavyweight titles.

Usyk currently holds the WBC, WBA, and IBF belts. A previously discussed match between the Ukrainian champion and former titleholder Deontay Wilder did not take place.

Usyk’s next opponent has not been confirmed yet. The options presented to his fans include former world champion Andy Ruiz and the current WBO titleholder Fabio Wardley. Other names on the list are Agit Kabayel, who holds the WBC interim heavyweight title, and Australian boxer Joseph Parker.

Earlier, on July 20, 2025, Oleksandr Usyk secured a fifth-round knockout victory over Daniel Dubois at a sold-out Wembley Stadium in London. This win allowed Usyk to retain his WBA, WBO, and WBC titles while reclaiming the vacant IBF belt, making him the undisputed heavyweight champion for the second time in his career.

The match marked the second meeting between the two fighters, following their controversial 2023 bout, and concluded when Usyk dropped Dubois with a flurry of punches to the head and body, forcing the referee to stop the fight.
