Zelenskyy, Danish PM Discuss Defense Ties as Denmark Prepares to Lead EU Council

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen during the NATO summit in the Hague, where the two leaders announced a landmark agreement to jointly produce weapons, marking the first such collaboration between Ukraine and a Western partner, Zelenskyy wrote on June 25.
The deal comes as Denmark prepares to take over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from Poland in the second half of 2025.

“I had a good meeting with Prime Minister of Denmark Mette Frederiksen,” Zelenskyy wrote on social media following the talks. “We held a substantive discussion on the development of joint weapons production, Denmark’s EU Council Presidency, and continued support for our warriors.”
The Ukrainian president emphasized that the agreement sets a precedent for deepened bilateral military cooperation and broader defense integration across Europe.
“We have important decisions—Denmark will become the first country with which we will launch joint defense production,” Zelenskyy said. “Every country that genuinely supports Ukraine now can count on a mutually beneficial partnership with us.”

The two leaders also discussed Europe’s evolving security architecture and Ukraine’s role in it, with Zelenskyy stressing that cooperation with nations like Denmark is essential to strengthening the continent’s collective defense.
“Together, we are strengthening Europe,” he added. “I am grateful to Denmark for its significant defense and political support. Thank you, Mette, for the fact that we can always count on you and the friendly people of Denmark.”
Earlier, Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron met to advance key defense priorities, including the increase of Mirage fighter jet supplies and the launch of joint production of interceptor drones to protect Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure from ongoing Russian missile and drone attacks.
