“We agreed to work together to give more security and opportunities for development to our societies,” he wrote, adding that he was grateful for “words of respect for our people.”

The president described the visit as part of Ukraine’s “active diplomacy” aimed at strengthening real security and economic interaction.

He noted that the two sides had prepared several substantive formats for further talks and framed the visit as part of a broader effort to support peaceful development across the region.

Following talks with al-Sharaa, Zelenskyy stated that Kyiv and Damascus agreed to work together to create “more security and opportunities for development” for both societies.

He added that the leaders discussed the situation in the region, prospects for improving it, and the circumstances of Russia’s war against Ukraine, while thanking Syria for its support.

Zelenskyy also highlighted what he described as strong mutual interest in exchanging military and security experience.

A major part of the discussion focused on Ukraine’s role as a reliable supplier of food products and on possible joint steps to strengthen food security across the wider region.

Zelenskyy noted that both sides also addressed Syria’s current energy and infrastructure challenges.

He added that Ukraine is ready to work with Syria so that “the opportunities of our states and peoples increase,” signaling Kyiv’s intention to deepen practical cooperation beyond political dialogue as it expands its diplomatic engagement in the Middle East.

The meeting also appears to have opened the way for a formal reset in Ukrainian-Syrian relations.

Ukraine and Syria have agreed to restore diplomatic relations after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa in New York, reopening ties that had been broken under Syria’s previous leadership.

The two countries first established diplomatic relations in 1992, but Syria cut them in 2022 after Bashar al-Assad’s government recognized the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk republics.

Zelenskyy stated the sides agreed to rebuild relations on mutual respect and trust, while Ukraine also expressed readiness to support Syrians on their path to stability.
