Zelenskyy: Russian Offensive on Sumy Completely Thwarted, Heavy Fighting in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia’s attempt to mount an offensive in Sumy region has been completely disrupted by Ukrainian forces. He made the statement following a meeting of the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s Staff on September 12.
According to Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi’s briefing, Russian forces operating in the Sumy direction have lost their ability to advance after suffering significant losses.
“As of today, we can state that the Russian offensive operation on Sumy has been fully thwarted by our forces. Fighting continues in the border areas of Sumy region, but the Russian grouping there has lost its offensive capabilities,” Zelenskyy said.

The president also highlighted that Ukrainian troops continue to counter Russia’s assaults in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia.
“We are actively resisting Russian assault activity in Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia. I am grateful to all our soldiers, sergeants, and officers who are carrying out combat missions in these directions and inflicting tangible losses on the Russians,” he added.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine’s Defense Forces regained 58 km² of territory in August 2025 and liberated several settlements from Russian occupation, while successfully defending in key sectors including Dobropillia, Pokrovsk, Novopavlivka, Zaporizhzhia, and Northern-Slobozhansk.
