Ukraine Regains 58 km² From Russian Forces in August 2025 Counteroffensive

In August, Ukraine’s Defense Forces regained 58 square kilometers of territory and liberated several settlements from Russian occupation.
Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi reported the results on Facebook on September 8 following a briefing on the military’s performance in August.
“August 2025 became a month of severe trials for our army, but in the end we achieved many positive results. Our main efforts were focused on containing the enemy and inflicting the greatest possible losses,” Syrskyi noted.
“We had to stabilize the situation in the most threatening directions—Lyman, Dobropillia, Pokrovsk, and Novopavlivka—while implementing active defense tactics, reclaiming lost territories, shielding our cities from missile and drone strikes, and striking deep into Russia.”

He pointed out that the month also marked significant organizational reforms within the Armed Forces. The transition to the corps system is nearing completion, with army corps assuming command authority, units, and responsibility for designated operational areas. According to Syrskyi, this reform is already strengthening effectiveness and efficiency in military command.
He added that “in August, the enemy sought to achieve strategic superiority, break through our defenses, and encircle Ukrainian forces in the Pokrovsk-Myrnohrad agglomeration, while also planning large-scale offensive actions in the Novopavlivka and Zaporizhzhia sectors. However, our troops prevented these plans from being realized. The Russians were forced to postpone their offensive in Zaporizhzhia and redeploy marine units to Donetsk region.”
“In fact, the month when the invaders hoped for breakthroughs and committed maximum resources turned into a period of comparatively minimal territorial gains for them. For example, in the Dobropillia sector, where they had concentrated an assault group, the Russians seized 13.5 square kilometers, but lost 25.5 square kilometers. In the Pokrovsk sector, their gain amounted to 5 square kilometers, while our forces regained 26 square kilometers. The Defense Forces prevented territorial losses in the Huliaipole and Prydniprovsk sectors, and in the Northern-Slobozhansk sector not only held their ground but also regained 4 square kilometers,” the Commander-in-Chief highlighted.

Syrskyi also underscored that “the enemy is using a tactic of ‘creeping’ advances by small infantry groups, attempting to infiltrate populated areas by exploiting gaps between positions and avoiding direct clashes.”
“At the same time, Ukraine’s Defense Forces are achieving their own successes. Over the course of August, they restored control over 58 square kilometers of territory and liberated a number of settlements,” he concluded.
Earlier, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine announced that the 425th Separate Assault Brigade “Skala” raised the national flag over the village of Zarichne, a settlement on the banks of the Zherebets River within the Lyman territorial community of Kramatorsk district, Donetsk region.
