Zelenskyy Secures Greek LNG Lifeline as Ukraine Races to Replace Gas Lost to Russian Strikes

Ukraine has reached an agreement with Greece on a new gas supply route designed to strengthen the country’s energy security ahead of winter. The announcement was made by President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on November 16.
According to Zelenskyy, the agreement with Greece will create an additional channel for importing gas, helping to stabilize supplies during the winter season.
He stated that Ukraine has already secured financing for gas imports and plans to cover nearly €2 billion in needs to compensate for the loss of domestic production caused by Russian strikes.
The president also noted that government funding for gas imports has already been allocated, adding that European institutions and partner states are contributing through financial guarantees and direct support.

Zelenskyy explained that the financing package combines Ukrainian government funds, support from European financial institutions working under European Commission guarantees, assistance from Ukrainian banks, and contributions from Norway.
The President added that consultations with the United States are ongoing to complete the funding structure.
The announcement came as Zelenskyy arrived in Athens for an official visit, ERT News reported. His aircraft landed at Athens International Airport shortly after midday, where he was welcomed by Greek Deputy Prime Minister Kostis Hatzidakis. Greece is the first stop of the President’s new European tour.
The agenda includes discussions on creating a vertical corridor for importing liquefied natural gas (LNG) into Ukraine and negotiating a new bilateral energy agreement.
According to ERT News, Zelenskyy is scheduled to meet Greek President Konstantinos Tassoulas, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, and parliamentary leadership to advance the talks.
Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine gained the ability to import gas via the Trans-Balkan route through Greece, Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova.
