Ukraine's Naftogaz Loses Nearly 50% of Gas Production Due to Russian Attacks in Winter 2025

Between 2024 and 2025, Russian attacks targeted 34 facilities of Ukrgazvydobuvannya , with the most devastating strike in February 2025 causing nearly 50% of total gas production to be lost. These bombardments threatened to trigger a systemic gas blackout.

This was reported on the Naftogaz website on April 21.

To maintain the heating season and offset the losses, Naftogaz urgently imported 800 million cubic meters of gas, balanced the system, and began restoring damaged infrastructure.

The heating situation in Kryvyi Rih, Mykolaiv, and Kherson was critical, according to Naftogaz. Continuous Russian shelling and the state of the networks could have left more than 1 million people without heating or electricity. In total, 470 emergency brigades worked around the clock to swiftly carry out necessary repairs and restore gas supply after accidents or bombardments.

Roman Chumak, acting Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine, emphasized that, in addition to its own resources, humanitarian aid—such as equipment, cranes, gas turbine installations, and more—worth over 5 billion UAH (approximately $135 million) was also utilized. According to him, this helped save the heating season in several cities, including Kryvyi Rih, Mykolaiv, and Kherson, and will enable the construction of cogeneration facilities.

In March, specialists restored over half of the gas production lost due to the attack. After January's shelling, Ukraine's underground gas storage facilities were quickly restored, with repair equipment on standby for future attacks.

Naftogaz invested over a billion UAH (approximately $27 million) to protect 130 critical sites, including fortifications and mobile fire units, minimizing the impact of enemy strikes.

The company has secured contracts for 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas, including 800 million cubic meters imported urgently this year, and purchased 300 million cubic meters of liquefied gas from ORLEN.

Naftogaz is modernizing energy infrastructure with international funding. By year-end, 177 megawatts of backup generation will supply over 500,000 Ukrainians.

In the first quarter, Naftogaz received €430 million (approximately $464.4 million) from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and Norway, to purchase 1 billion cubic meters of gas, with additional negotiations for €1 billion ($1.08 billion) to buy 2 billion cubic meters.
