NATO Rushes Patriot Missiles to Ukraine as Russian Airstrikes Intensify

Preparations are underway to rapidly deliver additional Patriot air defense systems to Ukraine, NATO’s top military commander, General Alexus Grynkewich, said as the country faces some of the most intense Russian air assaults of the war to date, according to Reuters on July 17.
“Preparations are underway—we are working very closely with the Germans on the Patriot transfer,” said General Alexus Grynkewich, NATO’s Allied Air Command leader, during a conference in Wiesbaden, Germany. “The guidance that I have been given has been to move out as quickly as possible.”
His comments come as Ukrainian cities endure sustained missile and drone attacks, including recent overnight barrages targeting energy infrastructure and military-industrial sites.
On July 14, US President Donald Trump stated that a portion of Patriot missile defense systems would arrive in Ukraine “within days.”

However, several US allies only learned of Trump’s plan after his public remarks, and questions remain over which country will provide the systems and how quickly the transfer can be executed.
Germany has already pledged to send a third Patriot battery to Ukraine, while ongoing discussions suggest Washington and other partners may be preparing similar moves in response to urgent Ukrainian requests for more Western air defense systems.
Earlier, Andriy Yermak, President Zelenskyy’s top advisor, stated that US President Donald Trump can bring an end to the war in Ukraine “before the end of this year” by following through on his threat of significant new sanctions against countries buying Russian oil and gas.
