Belarus Builds New Air Assault Brigade Just 40 Kilometers From Ukraine’s Border

Belarus is expanding a new air assault brigade that will eventually be stationed near the city of Gomel, approximately 40 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

The unit, designated the 37th Separate Air Assault Brigade, is being formed under the Belarusian Armed Forces’ Special Operations Forces, commander Aliaksandr Ilyukevich said in an interview with Belarusian Defense Ministry broadcaster VoenTV on August 2.

Officers have already been recruited, personnel have been called up, and several elements of the brigade have been established, according to Belarusian outlet Zerkalo.

One battalion has already been formed, while Belarus plans to establish a second battalion and additional combat-support, artillery, air defense, and reconnaissance units during 2026.

“It will be stationed not far from Gomel. We have already begun forming the military units, and one battalion has been formed. This year, we are forming another battalion, combat-support units, artillery, air defense units, and reconnaissance units,” Ilyukevich said in February.

The brigade is expected to be transferred to its permanent base near Gomel in 2027. Belarus currently operates three other comparable formations—the 103rd Brigade in Vitebsk, the 38th Brigade in Brest, and the 5th Brigade in Maryina Horka near Minsk.

Military infrastructure intended for the new formation has been under development for several years. According to the International Strategic Action Network for Security, Belarus extended state funding through 2028 for a military garrison and training range in the Gomel region. Construction of a training ground near the Yakimauka railway station was reported in January 2026.

Earlier, on July 22, Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said he had ordered special operations units to disperse along the country’s border with Ukraine, claiming the deployment was intended to strengthen security rather than prepare for offensive action.
