Daily Update: Russia Loses 1,230 Troops, 48 Artillery Systems and Two Air Defense Systems in One Day

Russian forces lost another 1,230 troops over the past 24 hours, along with artillery systems, armored vehicles, air defense systems, and one aircraft, according to figures released by the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine on May 16.

The latest battlefield assessment also reported 263 combat engagements along the front line during the same period, including 35 clashes in the strategically important Pokrovsk sector, which remains one of the main focal points of fighting in eastern Ukraine.
According to the Ukrainian military, Russia’s total estimated losses since the start of the full-scale invasion in February 2022 have now reached roughly 1,347,620 personnel.
The updated figures also include the destruction of two Russian tanks, five armored combat vehicles, 48 artillery systems, two air defense systems, one aircraft, and nine ground robotic platforms.

Ukraine’s military additionally reported the loss of 1,865 operational-tactical drones, 253 military vehicles and fuel tankers, and seven additional pieces of special equipment.
One of the most notable figures in the latest update was the reported destruction of two Russian air defense systems and one aircraft in a single day, amid continued large-scale aerial attacks and intensified drone warfare between the two sides.
According to the General Staff, Russian forces launched two missile strikes and 89 airstrikes over the past day, dropping 270 guided aerial bombs. Russian troops also deployed more than 9,100 attack drones and carried out over 3,000 shelling attacks on Ukrainian positions and populated areas.

The Pokrovsk direction in the Donetsk region remains one of the key areas of Russia’s offensive operations, with Ukrainian defenders reporting 35 Russian assault attempts near settlements including Kotlyne, Udachne, Novomykolaivka, and Novopavlivka.
The Huliaipole and Kostiantynivka directions also saw intense fighting, with Russian forces carrying out 33 and 23 assault operations respectively, according to the Ukrainian military.
Earlier, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that Ukrainian strikes damaged a Russian missile boat and a minesweeper at the Kaspiysk naval base in Dagestan, while also hitting the Ryazan oil refinery. Ukrainian forces additionally struck ammunition depots, electronic warfare infrastructure, and FSB-operated reconnaissance equipment in occupied territories.
