Drone Attack Triggers Fire at Key Russian Oil Refinery as Explosions Rock Yaroslavl

The Russian city of Yaroslavl came under a drone attack early on August 6, with strikes igniting a fire at one of Russia's largest oil refineries, according to Russian Telegram channel Astra.

“Our region is under attack by hostile Ukrainian drones. To ensure public safety, traffic has been temporarily suspended on the road leaving Yaroslavl toward Moscow,” Yaroslavl Region Governor Mikhail Yevrayev stated, as reported by Astra.

Residents shared videos on social media capturing the sound of explosions and showing two columns of dark smoke rising over the city.

According to an OSINT analyst from Astra, one of the fires was geolocated to the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery, while the location of the second fire has not yet been identified.

The Slavneft-YANOS (Novo-Yaroslavl Oil Refinery) processes approximately 15 million metric tons of crude oil annually, making it one of the five largest oil refineries in Russia.

The refinery produces Euro-5 gasoline and diesel fuel, aviation kerosene, jet fuel, lubricants, bitumen, paraffin and wax products, aromatic hydrocarbons, liquefied gases, and fuel oil.

The strike follows another reported Ukrainian drone attack on Russia's energy infrastructure. On August 5, a drone strike ignited a fire at Rosneft's Bashneft-UNPZ oil refinery in the city of Ufa, according to The Moscow Times.

The reported attacks are part of Ukraine's broader campaign targeting Russia's energy sector. They come after a recently completed 40-day operation by Ukraine's Security Service, which carried out more than 100 long-range strikes across Russian territory, including attacks on 14 oil refineries.
