German Interior Minister Evacuated to Kyiv Bunker During Russian Airstrikes

Manuel Hagel, the Interior Minister of the German state of Baden-Württemberg, was forced to shelter in a Kyiv bunker overnight. His delegation came under Russian airstrikes during an official visit to the Ukrainian capital, Die Zeit reported on September 9.
The German delegation’s arrival was disrupted before they even reached the city center. Shortly before pulling into Kyiv’s main railway station, Hagel and his team were evacuated from their train as air raid sirens sounded across the capital, Die Zeit wrote, citing initial accounts from Schwäbische Zeitung and BILD.

Later, while the delegation was traveling through Kyiv, a Russian drone was shot down directly overhead.
The official visit, which included German business and security industry representatives, aimed to strengthen bilateral economic ties and share technical expertise with Ukraine. During the trip, representatives from Daimler Truck and the University of Lviv signed a new cooperation agreement, according to the Baden-Württemberg Interior Ministry.
“We now need to upgrade our security architecture and become defensible at every level against these new threats,” Hagel stated regarding the visit. “Security policy is economic policy.”
Russian aerial attacks routinely target civilian infrastructure and railway networks throughout the full-scale invasion.
A Russian Iranian-designed Shahed drone recently struck a Kharkiv–Izium passenger train near the village of Iskra. The attack set a passenger car on fire and injured at least seven people.
The incident was the latest in a series of deliberate Russian strikes against Ukrainian railway infrastructure, following a recent drone attack on a commuter train in the Sumy region that injured ten people and involved a secondary strike on responding emergency crews.
