Kyiv’s McDonald’s restaurant near the Lukianivska metro station, the first McDonald’s ever opened in Ukraine, resumed operations on May 27 after sustaining damage during Russia’s large-scale missile and drone attack on the capital on May 24.

McDonald’s Ukraine confirmed the reopening in a statement published on the company’s official social media pages. “29 years beside you. Moving forward,” the company wrote.

The restaurant, opened on May 24, 1997, is considered a landmark location in Kyiv and has repeatedly suffered damage during Russian attacks on the city since the start of the full-scale invasion.

According to company statements released on May 27, the restaurant’s windows and facade were damaged during the strike. Images published by McDonald’s also showed part of the restaurant’s exterior signage melted by the blast.

McDonald’s Ukraine previously stated after the attack that the company was assessing the scale of the damage and preparing to reopen the location as quickly as possible.

“At the moment, we are assessing the level of damage and planning to restore operations as soon as possible. The main thing is that all our employees were in shelters and nobody was injured,” the company said following the strike.

The Lukianivska restaurant has been damaged approximately seven separate times since February 2022 but has continued operating after repairs. Following an earlier strike in July 2025, the company reportedly said it did not plan to relocate the restaurant because “customers want to see us at Lukianivska.”

The reopening came three days after one of Russia’s largest aerial attacks against Ukraine in recent months. During the overnight strike on May 24, Russia launched 90 missiles and around 600 drones of various types against Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities. Ukrainian air defenses reportedly intercepted 55 missiles and 549 drones.

Kyiv was the primary target of the attack. Damage was recorded across all districts of the capital, including residential buildings, schools, markets, and cultural sites. The attack also damaged infrastructure near the Lukianivska metro station, where a nearby shopping center caught fire.

Ukrainian officials reported that at least two people were killed and more than 90 others injured in Kyiv as a result of the strike.

Earlier, The New York Times reported that Russia has increasingly targeted facilities linked to major US companies operating in Ukraine, including Cargill, Coca-Cola, Boeing, Mondelez, Philip Morris, and Flex Ltd., in what Ukrainian and American business representatives described as an effort to discourage Western investment in the country.
