Lithuania’s President Signals Russia May Be Sending Drones to Destabilize NATO’s Eastern Flank

Russia may be deliberately directing drones into the airspace of Lithuania, other Baltic states, and Poland to destabilize Europe and keep society under continuous tension, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda said during an interview on the LRT Televizija show Tema diena.
He emphasized that these airspace incursions reflect Moscow’s broader effort to target nations backing Ukraine while avoiding a direct confrontation with NATO.

"This is increasingly indicating a certain trend. Not wanting to directly confront NATO, Russia is trying to attack those countries that are the most ardent supporters of Ukraine,” Nausėda stated in his interview with LRT Televizija.
The Lithuanian leader warned that Moscow can destabilize the region through various indirect methods.
“Such incidents—such as the recently shot down drone or other cases involving drones—are not necessarily a direct attack by Russia on NATO. At this stage, the Russians are probably not ready for this and do not want this,” the Lithuanian President noted.
Nausėda pointed out that allowing unmanned aerial vehicles to drift into neighboring countries serves as a calculated pressure tactic.
He added, “This could be a deliberate act—to allow the drone to go off course and enter the territory—not necessarily of Lithuania, but of any of the Baltic countries or Poland—to keep the public in tension. This is undoubtedly beneficial to Russia.”
On May 29, 2026, a Russian Geran-2 drone carrying an explosive payload struck a residential apartment building in Galați, Romania, marking the first time a Russian drone injured civilians on NATO soil since the start of the war.
In June 2026, multiple Ukrainian drones entered Baltic airspace and crashed after Russia used electronic warfare systems like Krasukha-4 to jam and spoof their GPS signals during deep-strike missions against Russian targets.

These measures deliberately diverted the drones into Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, and Finnish airspace to create pressure, cause societal unease, and attempt to disrupt European support for Ukraine.
In response, NATO scrambled jets, including a French fighter that shot down a drone over Latvia, while Baltic and Scandinavian leaders rejected Russian disinformation and pledged to strengthen air defense cooperation with Ukraine.
In July 2026, Finland restricted airspace near its eastern border following a surge of Russian military drone incursions into NATO territory.
Similar violations occurred across the Baltic region—including Finland, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania—where Russian unmanned aerial vehicles repeatedly breached allied airspace, prompting member states to scramble fighter jets, strengthen border surveillance, and implement defensive flight restrictions along the alliance's eastern flank.
