Missile Alert Declared in Russia’s Yamal for First Time, Over 2,500 km From Ukraine

A missile threat alert was declared in Russia’s Yamal region for the first time since the start of the full-scale war, more than 2,500 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, regional authorities reported on May 29.
The warning was also issued in neighboring regions, while airports in Yekaterinburg, Chelyabinsk, and Perm were temporarily closed for arrivals and departures.

The alert was not limited to Yamal. Artem Zhoga, the Russian presidential envoy to the Urals Federal District, announced what he described as an unprecedented decision: an air defense signal was triggered simultaneously across all six regions of the district.
On May 29, authorities in Chelyabinsk, Sverdlovsk, Kurgan, and Tyumen regions, as well as in the Yamalo-Nenets and Khanty-Mansi autonomous districts, reported the introduction of a “missile danger” regime almost at the same time.
“For the first time, a ‘missile danger’ regime has been introduced across the entire Urals Federal District. Dear residents, responsible services are on high alert. All necessary measures are being taken to ensure your safety. I ask everyone to remain calm,” Zhoga wrote on Telegram.

Authorities in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug said there had been no previous missile threats of this kind in the region. Residents were urged to remain calm, stay indoors, and avoid windows.
“Attention: a missile danger has been declared in Yamal and neighboring regions. We urge everyone to remain calm, stay indoors, and keep away from windows. In case of an emergency, call 112,” the official Yamal channel said.
The alert marks a notable expansion of Russia’s internal security warnings to one of its far northern regions, located deep inside the country and far beyond the areas that have more regularly faced drone and missile threat alerts since the start of Moscow’s full-scale war against Ukraine.
No official information about explosions, interceptions, or damage in Yamal had been reported at the time of the announcement.
Earlier, Russia issued an air raid alert more than 2,000 kilometers from Ukraine’s border for the first time overnight, as warnings were reported across at least 18 regions, signaling the expanding geographic reach of perceived threats deep inside the country.
