Russia temporarily suspended operations at Khrabrovo Airport in Kaliningrad after authorities declared a drone threat in the region, Russia’s aviation regulator Rosaviatsia reported on May 25.

The shutdown appears to be the first known case since the start of Russia’s full-scale war against Ukraine in which Kaliningrad’s civilian airport officially halted operations because of a drone threat.

Rosaviatsia said the airport temporarily stopped receiving and dispatching aircraft “to ensure flight safety,” but did not specify the reason for the restrictions.

At the same time, the regional account of Russia’s emergency warning system reported a “drone danger” alert in the Kaliningrad region, effectively confirming that the restrictions were linked to a possible UAV threat.

The flight restrictions lasted for about an hour and a half before Rosaviatsia announced that Khrabrovo Airport had resumed normal operations.

Russian officials did not report any explosions, air defense activity, or confirmed damage to facilities in the Kaliningrad region.

Kaliningrad is Russia’s heavily militarized exclave between Poland and Lithuania. It hosts facilities connected to Russia’s Baltic Fleet, as well as elements of Moscow’s air defense network.

Because of its location, the region plays an important role in Russia’s military logistics and posture in the Baltic Sea area.

Russian airports have increasingly been forced to suspend operations during drone alerts, particularly in central and border regions. Kaliningrad now appears to have joined the list of areas where the drone threat is directly disrupting civilian air travel.

Earlier, reports emerged that Russia is using electronic warfare systems based in Kaliningrad to interfere with the routes of Ukrainian drones striking targets inside Russia.
