Moldova Ready to Take In More Ukrainians If Winter Turns Severe, Sandu Says

Moldova is fully prepared to take in a new influx of displaced people if severe humanitarian conditions unfold in Ukraine during the upcoming winter season.
Speaking at the Moldova Security Forum in Chișinău on October 8, as reported by NewsMaker, President Maia Sandu announced that since 2022, over 1 million Ukrainians have crossed into the country fleeing Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, with approximately 100,000 having "found a home there," she said.

"If this winter in Ukraine is as difficult as the whole world expects, we are ready to accept as many people as necessary," Sandu stated.
Dorin Recean, former Prime Minister and Special Envoy to the President for Development and Resilience, noted that Chișinău is arranging both logistical and energy assistance for Ukraine while working to safeguard its own domestic grid.
He emphasized that the power distribution systems of Moldova and Ukraine remain interconnected, meaning Chișinău must anticipate potential domestic power supply disruptions.
When asked about direct electricity exports to Ukraine, Recean explained that Moldova cannot meet those power generation requirements independently, though energy supplies could pass through Moldovan territory via transit routes from Romania, NewsMaker reported.

European Union representative Dorota Dlouchy-Suliga reaffirmed that the bloc will sustain its support for the Ukrainian power network, supplying equipment such as generators to avert the worst-case scenario.
She added that the European Union has assisted Moldova in expanding its hosting capacity for displaced Ukrainians since 2022, though she did not clarify whether a separate framework is being drafted to support nations anticipating new humanitarian arrivals.

Earlier, on September 20, 2026, residents in central Moldova reported observing unidentified airborne objects and hearing an apparent explosion during the early morning hours, prompting immediate searches by local emergency services and police across the Orhei and Călărași districts.
Authorities received two separate alerts around 2:00 a.m. regarding a drone-like object in Berezloji and a bright light followed by a detonation in Dereneu; however, preliminary ground inspections uncovered no debris, impact craters, or fires to confirm that an object had fallen or exploded.
