Moldova Reports Suspicious Drone-Like Objects and Explosion. Here's What We Know

Residents in central Moldova reported unidentified airborne objects and an apparent explosion early on September 20.

However, according to Moldovan emergency services reports cited by RBC the same day, police found no debris or evidence of impact to confirm that anything had fallen or detonated on the ground.

According to Moldovan police, the first alert came at around 01:50 a.m., when a resident of the village of Berezloji contacted officers in the city of Orhei. The man stated that he had seen a flying object resembling a drone.

A second call reached police in the city of Călărași at around 02:00 a.m. A resident of the village of Dereneu described a bright light in the sky, followed by an explosion.

Officers began checks across both areas, examining terrain inside and beyond the villages, police noted. The preliminary inspection uncovered no debris, no traces of an impact, and no fires that would confirm an explosion on the ground or the fall of any object.

Authorities have not confirmed the nature or origin of the reported objects. Police indicated that checks in the affected districts were continuing.

The reports add to a series of airspace incidents along Moldova's border with Ukraine in recent weeks. On September 17, an unidentified drone crossed into Moldovan airspace from the Odesa region during a mass Russian attack, leaving Ukrainian territory minutes later.

Earlier, on August 27, five drones entered the country's airspace during an overnight assault, tracking toward the Ștefan Vodă district before turning back.

On August 17, a Russian "Banderol" loitering munition crashed near the village of Tălmaza, following a drone explosion on August 9 near Krokmaz that damaged farm structures.
