Moscow Region Declares Emergency Alert Over Drone Threat, Activating Mobile Warnings for First Time

On the evening of June 2, local authorities in the Moscow region issued an emergency warning regarding a drone threat, marking the first time such an alert had been officially declared. The notification was disseminated through the official channel of the Russian Unified State System for Prevention and Liquidation of Emergency Situations.
Residents across the region received mobile alerts advising them on necessary safety precautions during the ongoing security incident, according to ASTRA.

The official emergency notification instructed citizens on how to proceed, stating: "A drone threat has been declared in the Moscow region. Stay at home and do not go near windows, or proceed to a shelter. If you are outdoors or in a vehicle, take cover in a building, an underground pedestrian crossing, or a parking garage."
In addition to safety instructions, officials cautioned that residents might experience disruptions in mobile internet connectivity.

This alert follows reports that two Ukrainian drones were intercepted as they approached the capital.
The drone emergency declared in the Moscow region on June 2 occurred against a backdrop of mounting instability within the Russian economy, which had already shown signs of contraction earlier in the year.
The Russian economy faced significant headwinds as it grappled with the consequences of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
According to reports, economic growth slowed sharply to approximately 1% the previous year, down from 4.9% in 2024, and the economy contracted by 0.2% in the first quarter of 2026. Officials attributed this decline to a combination of high interest rates, Western sanctions, and a strong ruble.
