Russia used a record number of Iskander-M ballistic missiles in its massive overnight attack on Ukraine on June 2, according to data from Ukraine’s Air Force, cited by Militarnyi.

In total, Russian forces launched 33 ballistic missiles from Bryansk, Kursk, and Rostov regions, as well as from temporarily occupied Crimea. The main target of the strike was Kyiv, while Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, and Kharkiv also came under ballistic missile attack.

Russia also launched eight Zircon hypersonic missiles, 27 Kh-101 cruise missiles, five Kalibr missiles, and 656 drones of various types, most of them Shahed-type attack UAVs. Decoy drones were also used to overload and distract Ukrainian air defenses.

Ukraine’s air defense response involved aircraft, anti-aircraft missile units, electronic warfare teams, unmanned systems units, and mobile fire groups.

According to preliminary data as of 8:30 am, Ukrainian defenders shot down or suppressed 642 aerial targets, including 40 missiles and 602 drones of various types.

Among the intercepted targets were 11 Iskander-M ballistic missiles, 26 Kh-101 cruise missiles, three Kalibr missiles, and 602 drones.

Based on known prices for different 9M723 Iskander-M variants, Russia’s 33-missile ballistic barrage may have cost roughly $80 million to $100 million for the ballistic missiles alone.

“As of 8:30 a.m., impacts were recorded from 30 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles, and 33 strike UAVs at 38 locations, as well as the fall of downed UAVs or debris at 15 locations,” Ukraine’s Air Force said.

At least four people were killed in Kyiv and nine in Dnipro, with dozens more injured. Residential buildings and civilian infrastructure were damaged in the attacks.

Ukrainian officials had not previously reported Russia using such a large number of ballistic missiles in a single attack.

For comparison, throughout all of January 2026, Russia launched 91 ballistic missiles at Ukraine, the highest monthly figure recorded since the start of the full-scale war.

Earlier, Russia delivered nuclear warheads for Iskander-M missile systems to field storage points in Belarus as part of joint nuclear forces drills.
