Nearly 500 Ukrainian Drones Target Moscow Overnight in One of Largest Attacks in Two Years, Russia Says

Nearly 500 Ukrainian attack drones reportedly targeted Moscow and the surrounding region overnight on October 14, in what Russian state media described as one of the largest drone attacks on the Russian capital in the past two years.
According to the Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, Russian air defense systems began intercepting drones approaching the capital shortly after 11 p.m. on October 13.

“Russian Defense Ministry air defense systems destroyed 20 UAVs flying toward Moscow. Emergency services specialists are working at the sites where debris fell,” Sobyanin wrote on Telegram.
By 2:50 a.m., Sobyanin reported another interception involving 30 drones targeting Moscow.
The scale of the reported attack became clearer on the morning of October 14, when Sobyanin claimed that nearly 500 Ukrainian drones had approached the Moscow region.

“Between 8:30 p.m. on October 13 and 7:00 a.m. on October 14, 493 UAVs were flying toward the Moscow region. Most of them were neutralized by air defense forces on the distant approaches. Another 180 drones were destroyed while approaching Moscow,” Sobyanin wrote.
According to Russian media outlet Astra, the drone threat forced Moscow’s four major airports—Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, Vnukovo, and Zhukovsky—to temporarily suspend operations. Vnukovo Airport remained closed for more than eight hours, with passengers required to disembark from all flights.
Russian state news agency TASS reported that the overnight operation was among the largest drone attacks targeting Moscow and the surrounding region in the past two years.

The reported drone attack on Moscow comes alongside large-scale Russian missile and drone assault on Ukraine, which caused widespread damage to energy infrastructure and disrupted electricity supplies across several regions.
Russian forces launched 39 ballistic missiles and more than 120 drones overnight, leaving at least 600,000 people without electricity. Ukrainian monitoring channels also reported an unprecedented barrage of approximately 25 Zircon missiles targeting Kyiv and the surrounding region.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the strikes targeted energy and critical infrastructure in Kyiv, the Kyiv region, and Kharkiv, describing the assault as a deliberate violation of the energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump and an unusually direct challenge to Washington.
