Russia Has Hit 4,650 Ukrainian Schools and Education Facilities, Destroying 423

Russian attacks have damaged 4,650 educational facilities across Ukraine since the start of the full-scale invasion, with 423 destroyed completely, Ukrainian Parliament Commissioner for Human Rights Dmytro Lubinets said on September 1.

The figures were released as Ukrainian schools, colleges, and universities began a new academic year.

“Since the beginning of the full-scale war, 4,650 educational institutions have been affected by Russian shelling, and 423 have been completely destroyed. These are thousands of classrooms, lecture halls, laboratories, and spaces where Ukrainian children and young people were supposed to study,” Lubinets said.

The damage to education infrastructure has forced institutions across Ukraine to adapt their operations, including through remote learning and the relocation of students to other facilities.

Lubinets also reported that his office had received 644 education-related appeals in 2026 alone. They concerned access to education, children’s safety, university and school admissions, remote learning, institutional reorganizations, bullying, discrimination, and other issues.

“Therefore, today we are talking not only about the beginning of the academic year. We are talking about what Ukrainian education should look like during the war and what needs to be done to ensure that the right to education remains real for every child,” Lubinets said.

Ukraine’s education system entered the new academic year on September 1 under continued Russian attacks, with schools and universities using in-person, remote, or mixed formats depending on local security conditions.

In Kyiv, a Russian drone attack disrupted the first day of classes, forcing some students to begin the school year in shelters or join lessons online during an air raid alert.
