A Russian drone attack on Kyiv disrupted the first day of the new school year on September 1, with some students beginning classes in shelters or joining lessons online amid an air raid alert.

As schools prepared to welcome students for the start of the academic year, Russian drones targeted the Ukrainian capital during the morning hours.

TSN reported that some Kyiv students spent the traditional first bell in shelters as jet-powered Shahed-type drones approached the city.

The disruption was also reflected in posts shared by Kyiv parents. One father posted a photo on Threads showing his daughter attending a class online from home rather than going to school in person.

“What you need to know about September 1 in Kyiv… My daughter really wanted to see her classmates and teacher, but this is how it is,” he wrote.

The attack also affected several residential areas of the capital. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that, according to preliminary information, a drone fell in an open area near a five-story residential building in the Sviatoshynskyi district. Emergency services were dispatched to the scene.

In the Podilskyi district, a fire broke out on the 14th and 15th floors of a 16-story residential building, Klitschko reported. Emergency crews were also sent to the site.

The attack also marked the sixth consecutive day of Russian aerial strikes on the Ukrainian capital. Since last week, beginning around August 27, 2026, air raid alerts have sounded more than 40 times in Kyiv. On August 27 alone, 13 alerts were recorded in a single day—the highest daily number since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The latest attack came as part of a broader Russian missile and drone barrage across Ukraine. An Indian national was among 12 people killed in the strikes, which hit residential buildings, a railway depot in Kyiv, businesses, and critical infrastructure.
