The European Union and the United Nations Development Programme have wrapped up a large-scale recovery project in Ukraine, restoring 66 schools damaged by Russia’s full-scale invasion.

The initiative “EU4UASchools: Build Back Better" was implemented in partnership with Ukraine’s Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development. It targeted 11 war-affected regions, helping more than 21,600 students and teachers return to safe, in-person learning environments, the Ministry said.

The schools were not only repaired but also upgraded: shelters were reinforced, classrooms modernized, and new equipment installed, part of Ukraine’s broader push to rebuild stronger and smarter.

“When we rebuild schools, we’re rebuilding the lives of entire communities,” said Deputy Prime Minister Oleksii Kuleba. “It means parents can go back to work. Children can learn safely. Recovery begins with people, and schools are at the heart of that.”

Also, according to the latest Rapid Damage and Needs Assessment (RDNA4), over 3,373 educational institutions in Ukraine have been damaged or destroyed since February 2022.

At the same time, despite ongoing challenges, the state has made significant progress in adapting the educational infrastructure to wartime conditions: the share of schools equipped with shelters has increased from 68% to 80%, and the number of institutions able to provide in-person learning has risen from 25% to 57%.

Earlier, the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) and the National Police are continuing their national awareness campaign, “Expose the FSB Agent,” by holding in-person sessions with school and university students.

According to the national telethon, at least 14 teenagers have been recruited by Russian intelligence since the start of the year, many with the intent of drawing them into terrorist activities.
