The ministry stated that the strike was carried out “in response to terrorist acts” and claimed that “all designated targets were hit” and that the “objectives of the strike were achieved.”
The Russian military said the intended targets included defense-industrial facilities, Ukrainian military airfields, and Territorial Recruitment Centers. Moscow also claimed that damage to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra was caused by a Ukrainian Patriot air defense missile rather than by Russian weapons.
Ukrainian officials reported a different picture of the strike’s impact. In Kyiv, emergency services responded to damage at the UNESCO-listed Kyiv Pechersk Lavra complex, where a fire broke out in a section of the Dormition Cathedral. Authorities also reported damage to facilities at the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio and to a Nova Poshta logistics terminal.
According to Ukrainian reports, the attack also affected civilian infrastructure in other cities. In Dnipro, local authorities reported damage to the city’s House of Organ and Chamber Music and an educational institution.

Ukrainian officials said five people were killed and more than 30 injured in Kyiv as a result of the attack. In Kyiv region, authorities reported damage to residential buildings in five districts and injuries among civilians, including a child.
The overnight strike was one of the largest aerial attacks of the war. Ukrainian officials said Russia launched more than 680 aerial weapons, including missiles and drones. Ukraine’s air defenses reportedly intercepted or suppressed 632 of those targets.
Earlier, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that more than 2,000 civilians were killed or injured in May 2026, marking the highest monthly civilian casualty toll since April 2022. The mission verified 274 deaths and 1,763 injuries, attributing the increase primarily to Russian missile, aerial bomb, and short-range drone attacks on populated areas.
