According to a statement made during a national telethon on May 3, State Border Guard Service spokesperson Andrii Demchenko confirmed that Ukrainian forces detected and identified the object as a balloon designed to support Russian strike capabilities.
“Yesterday evening, we also observed an aerial target entering from Belarus, which was later identified as a balloon. In essence, it is a relay system to amplify the signal for aerial weapons that Russia uses against Ukraine during attacks,” Demchenko said.

He added that Ukrainian border authorities continue to monitor activity along the Belarusian direction and do not rule out further destabilization attempts.
“The threat from Belarus never disappears… we can expect or prepare for attempts to destabilize the situation along our border, and we do not exclude provocations,” he stated.
The balloon was reportedly detected during a broader wave of Russian drone activity targeting Ukraine on the same evening. Ukrainian officials indicated that such platforms may be used to extend communication range or improve coordination of unmanned aerial systems during strikes.

Authorities have not disclosed additional technical details about the system, but its function as a signal relay suggests a role in overcoming electronic warfare interference or terrain-related communication limits.
The development follows earlier warnings from President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who on May 2 reported “specific activity” near the Belarusian border. He stated that Ukraine is closely monitoring the situation and is prepared to respond if necessary.
Ukrainian officials continue to assess the northern direction as a potential source of limited-scale provocations amid ongoing coordination between Belarus and Russia.
