Russia Violates Trump-Announced Energy Ceasefire, Zelenskyy Vows Ukrainian Response

Russia violated the energy ceasefire announced by US President Donald Trump, and Ukraine will respond if Moscow continues strikes on energy infrastructure this winter, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated, Babel reported on October 12.
Speaking in Warsaw, Zelenskyy noted that no Russian oil refineries were burning the previous night, but warned that Ukraine would retaliate if Russia failed to observe the ceasefire.

Trump announced on October 9 that he had reached an agreement with the Russian leader, Vladimir Putin, for Russia to supply diesel to US and international markets. The deal envisioned immediate shipments of more than 300,000 tons, followed by larger deliveries in November and afterward.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine can influence both Russian refinery operations and the movement of oil tankers.
“Why don’t the United States make an agreement with Ukraine on diesel supplies? We influence whether these vessels move. We determine whether oil refineries operate,” Zelenskyy stated, according to Babel.
Babel also reported that Zelenskyy questioned whether the volumes of Russian diesel proposed for export could significantly affect the global market.

He cited potential Russian supplies of 300,000 to 500,000 tons per month compared with global consumption of around 120 million tons, arguing that other considerations were behind the decision.
Separately, Babel noted that Zelenskyy warned of a potential food crisis caused by disruptions to grain supplies.
“Everyone is talking about diesel, but no one is talking about grain,” he stated.
According to Babel, Zelenskyy warned that food shortages could emerge within two to three months in parts of Africa, as well as some countries in Asia and the Middle East.

He described the blocking of grain exports as a “new Hormuz.”
Zelenskyy also stated that Ukraine is prepared to discuss holding elections if a full ceasefire is established.
A day earlier, Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine was ready to stop striking Russian oil refineries only if Moscow ended attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure. He emphasized that any de-escalation had to be reciprocal and backed by credible guarantees.
