Russian Drones Hit Homes, University and Shopping Center in Zaporizhzhia, Injuring Six

At least six civilians were injured in an overnight Russian drone attack on Zaporizhzhia that damaged residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, according to Mykhailo Semikin of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration on September 21.

Russian forces targeted residential areas and civilian facilities with drones, damaging several apartment buildings, a university, and a shopping center, Semikin said.

Six civilians were injured in the attack and are receiving necessary medical assistance.

Emergency crews worked at the sites of the strikes throughout the night to address the aftermath of the attack. Several fires caused by the strikes have already been extinguished, while response efforts remain ongoing.

Following the attack, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia was continuing to escalate its actions and warned that Moscow was signaling its readiness to expand the war.

“Russia is not backing down from its escalation and is sending many signals that it is ready to expand the war. All of this is happening as the stability of the world has already been shattered by this war,” Zelenskyy wrote on X.

The president added that pressure on Russia must continue in order to bring the war to an end, emphasizing that Ukraine’s retaliatory actions and long-range sanctions were proving effective.

“At the UN General Assembly, we will discuss how we can achieve peace through joint efforts. This is the main task that all leaders should be working on. I thank everyone who is helping,” Zelenskyy noted.

The attack on Zaporizhzhia came amid Russian strikes elsewhere in Ukraine. On September 18, Russian forces struck Sumy and surrounding areas with six to seven guided aerial bombs, killing two people and injuring at least five others, including a child.

One of the bombs hit a multi-story residential building in the city’s Kovpakivskyi district, striking between the third and fourth floors.
