Search and rescue operations in Kyiv’s Darnytskyi district have concluded after more than 28 hours, with 24 people killed in the aftermath of Russia’s May 14 mass attack on the Ukrainian capital, Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko said on May 15.

According to Klymenko, three of the victims were children. A total of 48 people were reported injured as emergency crews completed the recovery phase at the site of a destroyed residential building.

Rescue workers cleared more than 3,000 cubic meters of debris during the operation, while units of Ukraine’s State Emergency Service have now moved on to emergency stabilization and recovery efforts.

According to Klymenko, nearly 400 people also received psychological assistance at the scene from specialists of the State Emergency Service and the National Police, who were providing support and counseling to survivors and relatives of the victims.

Kyiv Mayor Vitalii Klitschko later clarified that the children killed in the strike were girls aged 12, 15, and 17.

During the night of May 14, Russia launched a large-scale combined missile and drone assault on Kyiv and the surrounding region, striking multiple districts and causing extensive damage to both residential and commercial infrastructure.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the capital came under sustained attack, with both direct impacts and falling debris reported across several areas as Ukrainian air defenses engaged incoming targets.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia had launched more than 1,560 drones since midnight, underscoring the scale of the overnight escalation.

Ukraine’s Air Force and General Staff reported that air defense systems intercepted 41 missiles and 652 drones during the attack. According to official figures, Ukrainian forces downed all three Kh-47 “Kinzhal” aeroballistic missiles, 12 of 18 Iskander-M/S-400 ballistic missiles, and 29 of 35 Kh-101 cruise missiles.

Out of 675 attack drones launched, 652 were either destroyed or suppressed by electronic warfare systems.

Later, on May 14, UK Defense Secretary John Healey instructed officials to speed up the delivery of air defense systems to Ukraine in response to Russia’s latest wave of large-scale drone strikes, according to a statement posted on X.

Healey described the recent attacks over the past 24 hours as “shocking” and said the United Kingdom would accelerate the provision of both air defense and counter-drone capabilities to strengthen Ukraine’s protection against ongoing Russian strikes.
