Ukraine and France Expand Air Defense Cooperation With Focus on Aster-30 Missiles

Ukraine and France are deepening their military cooperation to bolster Kyiv’s air defense capabilities throughout this year.
Ukrainian officials held high-level discussions with the French Minister of the Armed Forces and Veterans, Catherine Vautrin. The focus of these talks shifted toward the urgent acquisition of advanced radar systems and interceptor missiles, according to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Mykhailo Fedorov on June 11.

These assets are vital for enhancing the detection and neutralization of airborne threats, providing a more robust shield for Ukrainian cities against ongoing aerial attacks during Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Central to the talks was the procurement of Aster-30 missiles , which remain a primary priority for Ukraine's defense needs. Both parties also dedicated significant attention to strengthening anti-ballistic missile protections.

Beyond immediate equipment transfers, the discussion addressed long-term industrial synergy. Plans for the potential localization of French weapons production within Ukraine and the launch of collaborative defense-industrial projects were highlighted as key objectives.
Ukrainian leadership expressed gratitude to France for its unwavering support and its proactive stance in addressing the "shadow fleet" used by Russia to bypass sanctions and sustain the financing of its military operations.
Following discussions in London on June 7, 2026, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy secured agreements from the United Kingdom, France, and Germany to assist Ukraine in bolstering its defenses against ballistic missile threats.
During these talks with Prime Minister Keir Starmer, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and President Emmanuel Macron, the leaders addressed the urgent need for interceptor missiles capable of neutralizing Russian strikes, with Zelenskyy proposing that the three nations pool their industrial and financial resources to develop a European-controlled interceptor program to reduce reliance on US production.
