Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited the northern city of Slavutych to coordinate border defense strategies with local leaders, issuing a warning to Belarus that any new aggressive actions against Ukraine will be met with severe consequences, the president said in a statement on May 21.

Meeting with community heads from the Kyiv and Chernihiv regions, Zelenskyy emphasized the ongoing construction of fortifications and the deployment of additional Defense and Security Forces. These reinforcements are specifically designed to secure the northern frontier against potential threats originating from Belarus and Russia’s Bryansk region.

Zelenskyy noted that Moscow is trying to drag Minsk deeper into the war. In response, he stated that Ukraine possesses the capability to act preventively against Russian staging grounds and warned the de facto Belarusian leadership to stay “on its toes,” promising tangible repercussions for any hostile moves.

“We remember that in 2022, the offensive also came from the territory of Belarus. We will not forget this,” the President stated in his address. He assured the public that Ukrainian intelligence and defense forces fully understand the current threat matrix and are prepared to respond justly and unconditionally.

Zelenskyy’s border visit coincides with a renewed tensions between Kyiv and Minsk. Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko had recently claimed he would officially join Russia’s war against Ukraine if Belarus is attacked first, vowing to defend the “motherland from Brest to Vladivostok.” Alongside this conditional threat, Lukashenko issued a sudden proposal to hold direct bilateral talks with the Ukrainian President.

The Ukrainian President’s Office dismissed the overture, with Presidential Advisor Dmytro Lytvyn stating that Lukashenko’s words have meant nothing since he allowed his country to be used as a staging ground for the 2022 full-scale invasion.

Rebuking the offer for negotiations, Lytvyn emphasized that Kyiv is ignoring the dictator’s rhetoric and focusing entirely on monitoring tangible military movements along the northern frontier.
