Ukraine Hits Ust-Luga Port With Drones as Fire Breaks Out in Russia’s Leningrad Region

Ukrainian defense forces struck the Russian port of Ust-Luga in the Leningrad region with drones overnight on September 1, causing a fire and damage within the port area.

Leningrad region Governor Alexander Drozdenko first reported drone activity in the region at around 2 a.m., later saying that Russian air defenses had been activated and had intercepted aerial targets.

Following the attack, however, damage and a fire were reported at the port of Ust-Luga.

“As a result of the UAV attack, damage was recorded in the Ust-Luga port area, and a fire broke out. Emergency services are working at the scene. Information on the consequences is being clarified,” Drozdenko wrote on Telegram.

The Ukrainian OSINT monitoring project Exilenova+ also published footage showing the overnight attack on the port of Ust-Luga in Russia’s Leningrad region.

Ust-Luga is one of Russia’s key seaports on the Baltic Sea. Although it handles a range of cargo, its primary role is the export of energy resources. The port serves as the terminus of the Baltic Pipeline System-II (BPS-II).

Russia uses the port to export crude oil and petroleum products, including shipments carried by tankers belonging to the so-called “shadow fleet.”

The port is located in Luga Bay in the Gulf of Finland, approximately 110 kilometers from St. Petersburg and near the Estonian border. It lies roughly 900 kilometers from Ukraine’s state border.

The Ust-Luga port area also hosts major industrial and transshipment facilities, including sites operated by Novatek and EuroChem.

The September 1 strike follows another reported drone attack on Ust-Luga less than three weeks earlier. Overnight on August 14, a fire broke out at the port after the facility was targeted by drones.

At the time, Drozdenko reported that the attack had caused damage and sparked a fire, prompting emergency crews to begin extinguishing the blaze. By 6:21 a.m. local time, he claimed that Russian air defenses had downed 51 drones over the Leningrad region.
